Does surgical hair restoration work?

Yes. The most that surgical hair restoration like hair transplantation can do is to give you the appearance of a full head of hair, but the truth remains that total and complete hair regrowth is just not possible.

By far, the results of hair transplantation can provide a functional and natural-looking scalp that can significantly improve your sense of self-worth and confidence.

How is hair transplant done?

In the old days, hair transplantation involved moving individual hair follicles that are resistant to balding from the unaffected area of the scalp to the bald spot. It is mainly used to treat male pattern baldness. But in view of the fact that hair naturally grows in follicles with groupings of 1-4 hairs, today’s most advanced methods transplant these 1-4 follicular units in their natural groupings.

After the induction of the anaesthesia, the surgeon removes the donor hair through tiny round incisions or thin, long strips. These extracted grafts are examined under the microscope for further dissection into single follicular units of 1-4 hairs each. Tiny recipient sites are then made in the thinning or balding areas of the scalp. The follicular grafts are transplanted into these sites using very fine instruments.

Can hair transplant bring back the natural hairline?

Yes. Making progress beyond the old-style ‘plug type’ transplants has been possible using sophisticated techniques which allow the transplantation of large numbers of small grafts. With the use of advanced technology and artistic creativity, today’s highly skilled and experienced surgeons can restore hairlines and crown coverage in a method that truly defies detection. They can create natural-looking, wavy, and randomized hairlines.

How much pain will this invasive procedure inflict?

Advances in local anaesthetics and the way it is applied allow for a comfortable and relaxing procedure. Most patients listen to music, watch movies, or nap during the procedure. Some discomfort is to be expected as the anaesthetic is injected into the scalp. Immediately after injecting the anaesthetic, there will be numbness and no pain can be felt. If it wears off during the course of the procedure, more is injected to re-anaesthetize the area.

What happens after the procedure?

The transplant is visible around a week to ten days following the procedure. The grafts form small scabs in the days after the procedure. If one has enough surrounding hair, these scabs can be camouflaged with creative styling. If not, the small scabs may be visible but do not attract much attention. Most patients wear a hat or simply cover the area with their existing hair when they are in public. Two days after the procedure, patients may resume normal activities although with some restrictions in certain exercises, drinking, and smoking. Expected new hair growth appears 2-3 months after and hair is restored and fully grown in about a year.

In modern follicular unit transplantation, patients wear a hat or headband only when they leave the office. They are also able to shower and shampoo the next day.
